Abstract
Open Source Software and Free Software (OSS/FS) have of late risen
to great prominence. Not only does OSS/FS provide cheaper alternatives
to proprietary software, in some cases, they are deemed to be of
a quality exceeding commercial standard. While there are obvious
advantages of using OSS/FS in education, policy makers, school leaders
or even teachers must make careful and thorough considerations when
contemplating to use OSS/FS. This paper shares with the readers
the author's experience in using OSS/FS in the teaching and learning
of Mathematics and discusses about the impacts and potentials of
OSS/FS in education.
