Indian Geometric Patterns

In India, like in many other countries, nations and cultures, one can find traditional patterns based on geometric constructions. Many of these patterns are part of the Islamic heritage of Moghuls some other are related the the Buddhist and Hindu architecture and art. The excellent book Masterpieces of Traditional Indian Architecture by Professor of Architecture Satish Grover shows a number of interesting sites in India where one can discover not only beautiful architecture but also incredibly interesting mathematics. Although the author talks only about architecture, a mathematician with a bit of imagination can find there also geometric shapes and principles of symmetry, tessellations, crystallography, etc. More about book by Professor of Architecture Satish Grover we can read at the Goodreads web site.

All presented here patterns are fragments of Indian art and architecture, some other are taken from traditional carpets and kilims that one can find in India.
