Abstract
The Open University has produced a new second year course in mathematical methods and models. More than 800 students register for the course, which is aimed at science and engineering students as well as those who intend to major in mathematics.
In addition to printed and video materials we have produced a total of fifteen multi-media packages, presented on 7 CDs. These offer a media-rich environment for the student to explore a wide variety of techniques and applications in an interactive way. Many of these activities also involve use of the course computer algebra package - Mathcad Pro 7.
The enterprise represents a substantial development effort, having taken many years of person effort in academic construction, graphic design, and programming: it has been completed in partnership with the BBC.
I shall demonstrate some of the highlights of the multi-media packages, including some very interesting examples of the teaching of mechanics.
