Abstract

Until recently, symbolic manipulation on computers was available only on mainframe and sophisticated desktop computers and thus was mainly of significance for professionals and advanced undergraduates. However, the recent development of hand-held calculators with algebraic capabilities raises the possibility of regular access to symbolic manipulation software by secondary school and early undergraduate students. By their nature, calculators are considerable more portable and usually much less expensive than computers with CAS capabilities; both portability and cost are of great significance for educational settings. This is a hands-on workshop to explore the capabilities currently available and to consider their significance for the mathematics curriculum, teaching methods and assessment. Participants will use the Casio Algebra FX 2.0 calculator, designed especially for mathematics students. No previous experience with this or other calculators will be assumed.
