Abstract

The evaluation of quality of the subject teacher education in the University of Tampere (Finland) has traditionally been based both on the quantitative and qualitative information. Evaluation has been conducted using various types of assessment instruments such as

  • feedback information gathered by the teacher of each particular course,
  • evaluation and development of so called curriculum modules conducted by teams who have been responsible of the teaching and design of these modules. The teams The groups have included the students' representatives.
  • reflective self-assessment (portfolio assessment) conducted by each teacher and each student,
  • teachers' and students' unformal discussions in so called dialogue teams.
Especially the students of the department has considered the evaluation system to be too laborious for them. Students have also been doubtful if the feedback they have given really has had an effect to anything. In order to add more interactivity and flexibility to the evaluation process we have decided to transfer the evaluation into a web-environment. This web-based evaluation system has originally been developed to be used in schools. It includes tools both for external evaluation given by teachers and for self-evaluation written by pupil. Pupils and teachers can give feedback, read written assessments or have discussions with each other when ever they want it. Beginning from the next autumn we will apply this web-based evaluation system at our department to the evaluation of mathematics teacher education. During the autumn we will together with our students develop the evaluation tools further to be better suitable for our own needs. The final conference paper, if it will be accepted, will give an overview about different kind of evaluation tools which we have in this system. In the paper we will also discuss in more detail the ideas which we have how this system might be developed. By the beginning of the conference we will also be able to demonstrate the system and present some experiences which we have got from the usage of this web based evaluation system.
