Abstract
A modern graphics calculator, such as Casio's cfx-9850GBPLUS, offers significant new opportunities for learning and teaching elementary algebra. In this hands-on workshop, we will explore some of these opportunities with a focus on shifting the emphasis in algebra from symbolic manipulation towards the creation of meaning for algebraic objects. Participants will be interested in the teaching of algebra to students in the final years of secondary school, but will not be expected to already be experienced classroom users of the calculators.
