Abstract

Graphics calculators offer a variety of ways of supporting conceptual development in secondary school algebra. We will explore some of these in this hands-on workshop, using Casio cfx-9850GB PLUS calculators. Topics addressed will include the meaning of algebraic expressions, the various representations of functions and the solution of equations and inequalities. An important characteristic of graphics calculators is their potential availability to most algebra students most of the time, because of their affordability relative to more sophisticated technologies. The implications of this for both curriculum development and teaching will be explored. Previous graphics calculator experience will not be assumed.
