Abstract

Until quite recently, symbolic manipulation on computers was available only on mainframe and sophisticated desktop computers and thus was mainly of significance for professionals and advanced undergraduates. However, the recent development of hand-held calculators with algebraic capabilities raises the possibility of regular access to symbolic manipulation software by secondary school students. This is a hands-on workshop to explore the capabilities currently available and to consider their significance for the mathematics curriculum, teaching methods and assessment. Participants will use the Casio Algebra FX 2.0 calculator, which was designed especially for school mathematics students. We will gain some structured experience in order to participate in a consideration of arguments for and against the use of such technology in schools. No previous experience with this or other calculators will be assumed.
