Abstract

The manipulation of mathematical symbols, something that is done regularly in probability and statistics, somehow has not yet found its way into standard statistical packages such as MINITAB and SPSS. Moreover, the statistics packages that are bundled with symbolic computing systems such as Mathematica and Maple, are very limited in scope and provide only small fraction of the functionality that is necessary for the learning of probability and statistics. This tutorial will focus on a statistics package, developed for the Maple CAS, and diverse ways in which this package can be used in statistics instruction. It will give an overview of the package and illustrates its use through problems that are commonly encountered in undergraduate courses in probability and statistics.
