Abstract

Early number development among young children requires that they are provided with experiences that not only help them understand the concept of numbers and their symbolic representation but also exploration of how new numbers can be built from other numbers. In this regard activities that foster the identification of number patterns have been acknowledged to play an important role in enhancing children's appreciation of numbers, and knowledge of use of these concepts in the solution of problems.

This tutorial will involve hands-on activities about how electronic spreadsheets such as Excel can be utilized in helping children generate number patterns. Discussion will also focus on how knowledge of the number patterns can be used in problem-solving contexts within K-6 mathematics. The activities will be of interest to teachers of primary and junior high school mathematics.
