Abstract

During the period from 1997 to 2006, graphics calculator use in Year 12 Mathematics Examinations in the State of Victoria, Australia, has moved through three distinct phases. Firstly, graphics calculators were permitted but not required in examinations. At this stage, calculators with CAS were not permitted. In the second phase, graphics calculators were required in examinations. Again, calculators with CAS were not permitted. Finally, calculators with CAS were permitted in all subjects and required in selected subjects. This paper reviews the curricula and assessment changes that have accompanied this process as well as the implementation issues that have had to be addressed and resolved.
