Computer Lab Sessions for Undergraduate Math Courses: Is It a Waste of Time?

Abstract

For many years, the author's residing university has implemented computer lab sessions for lower level math courses. While a handful of the colleagues are supportive of using IT in teaching, many are sceptical about the effectiveness of the lab sessions. Students feedback on lab sessions has also been collected. Around half of the students find the lab sessions help them in understanding mathematical concepts better, the other half feel that the sessions are useless.

In this presentation, the author will elaborate on the pros and cons of having computer lab sessions from the perspective of teachers and students. The author will also make some suggestions on how to change the perception of those who are against lab sessions.
