Abstract

In this hands-on computer workshop, participants will use The Geometer's Sketchpad to visit hyperbolic geometry and the Poincare' disk in a progression leading from exploration of the 5th postulate to construction and classification of the (infinite number of) regular tessellations that become possible in this non-Euclidean geometry. A smattering of historical background and connections to Escher's famous Circle Limit series may make this an appealing standalone unit to consider at the upper secondary or undergraduate level, as well as in preservice or inservice teacher development.

No prior Sketchpad or hyperbolic geometry experience necessary.
