Abstract

Tessellations, an important and interesting topic for school mathematics, are an important element of Islamic art and design. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to use The Geometer's Sketchpad, a widely used computer software program for mathematics visualization and exploration, as they investigate what types of polygons can be used to tessellate the plane, some of the ways of classifying polygons, and see how Islamic artists approached their craft to make intricate tessellating patterns.
